How Kaavya Viswanathan Got Popular, Got Rich and Got Caught

Kaavya Viswanathan first interested me because of her last name (same as mine but not related), then she intrigued me when I learnt she got USD 500, 000 as advance for writing two books from the famous Little Brown publishers and her first book (How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got A Life : A Novel) is a hit and has been bought by Dreamworks for a possible movie. Then I read about possible plagiarism and her subsequent apology. All in a span of few days.

I hope the copying is really unintentional as she says and Kaavya goes on to produce a equally popular second novel but all original.

  3. Its kind of embarassing for all Indians.. I was happy to see a Indian teenager doing well for herself and making us proud there at Harvard. But now it sounds like a stack of cards..
Kaavya is a young woman and i am sure she would be subject to criticism wherever she goes. Because this episode has been highly dramatic.. The title is apt Ram, How Kavya got rich, got popular and got caught!
Media which was praising her for her immense talent just 3 weeks back have started hitting hard.. and some american websites refer Kaavya as- 'the brown kid who was dishonest'. They are trying to bring this issue on racial grounds. Hope the issue dies down before it grows on a racial discrimination sort of stuff.

Kaavya's book episode is finally coming to an end with a sore note for the author.
